Calcium Therapy

I don’t know anybody that can say I love the dentist, for some unknown reason the dentist has not changed much at all in their technology in an era where we can see through walls, have gone to the moon among many other accomplishments.

For the most part the Dentist Industry is still ancient and by the book, not to mention barbarian and highly traumatizing. Definitely not my favorite to say the least. I am always on a research quest to find alternatives that can benefit others and myself. After extensive research I came across these Doctors , their research,  extensive information and products that I personally can say to you how grateful I am that there are professionals out there that actually care and think out of the box.

Dr Mark Manhart DDS has made a huge difference on my teeth health, for starters when I contacted him, I presented him with the news that my dentist a well known PROFESSOR that actually teaches dentists, had given me the diagnosis of either a root canal or extraction of two molars, really?  Hmmmm that quick statement didn’t feel right.and when Dr Manhart checked the exrays it was not even a CAVITY, wow apparently this kind of diagnosis occurs quite often, but not on myself again, for one I am not going back to the dentist that quickly makes that kind go not well grounded decisions at thousands of dollars in deductibles . I got my healing power back with the help of Dr Manhart, I am so thankful and wish for all of you to connect with this products and Dr. Manhart DDS. and take the health of your teeth in your own hands.

Calcium Therapy by:

Dr. Mark J. Manhart (DDS 1962) & Dr. Thomas B. Steg (DDS 1973)

Dr Manheart and tooth brush 3-17-15

Doctors Manhart and Steg have practiced dentistry with calcium materials for many years. During their combined 86 years of general family dental practice, Manhart (48 years) and Steg (38 years) have collaborated on Endodontic, Osteo – Endo – Cystic, and Periodontal therapies for their patients as well as conducted seminars and research projects.

These Doctors. have established the Calcium Therapy Institute and are teaching their findings all over the USA from New York to California. They have shared their expertise with dentists and alternative medicine specialists throughout Europe and Asia, especially in France, England, Poland, India, Scotland, Spain, China and South Korea.

What is Calcium Therapy?

Calcium Therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to gum surgeries. This rapid, safe and effective treatment of the gums, bone and teeth is pain-free and long-lasting. The materials reduce bleeding, soothe sore gums, tighten teeth, heal abscesses and cysts, strengthen bones, control bad breath, and whiten teeth.

These are inspiring and goal-oriented times for the Calcium Therapy Institute. We know that most of dental disease can be prevented. This is why we practice and teach calcium therapy beyond our office in Omaha, Nebraska. Performing and teaching Calcium Therapy in our offices in Omaha, Nebraska requires us to present and educate domestic and international audiences . Treating our local and fly-in patients energizes us and our practice of general dentistry.

Calcium and the relationship to Dentistry

Calcium compounds have shown to be valuable materials in dentistry for a hundred years. Formulations of calcium with esters exhibit remarkable properties in the healing process of dental structures, namely, in periapical (root tip) and endodontic (root canal) tissues , in vital root resection procedures, and on pulp tissues.

Over a period of 16 years calcium compounds have been used by the present observer in the development of therapies for endodontic and periodontal (gum and bone) infections . Since periodontal disease is the most common degenerative disease in industrialized societies, the Calcium Method of Periodontal Therapy (CMPT) is of significant interest. Furthermore, the versatility of calcium-ester compounds extends into such diverse areas as dental implantology and calcium deficiencies .

Therefore, this study was directed toward relationships among calcium compounds, periodontal disease, and calcium levels of saliva and blood. It is this observer’s hypothesis that CMPT is not only a sound and effective therapy, but could be related to the blood serum calcium level and calcium deficiencies. Research has indicated that one of the most responsive stores of calcium in the body to restore calcium imbalance is the alveolar bone, the delicate bone around the neck of each tooth as one of the tooth-supporting tissues, the Periodontium . That is, the exact tissues directly and immediately affected by advanced periodontal disease and by the CMPT.

History Of Lipstick

from http://www.lipstickhistory.com

The dawn of prehistoric times, humans always had the need to distinguish themselves among others. Clothes, shoes, tools, jewelry and cosmetics were first of the ways we managed to do that, but lipsticks and facial paints were one of the most noticeable ways to change our appearance. Hunters painted their skin to better blend in with their surroundings, priests and acolytes decorated themselves to honor their gods and beliefs, and young people used every way imaginable to make them more pretty and presentable to the opposite sex.

However, in the long prehistoric periods lipsticks were made only from readily available natural sources – fruit and plant juices. As early civilizations started appearing in the Middle East, North Africa and India, advanced manufacturing processes enabled mankind to finally start producing new kinds of lipsticks. First ones to do so were Mesopotamian women, who grinded out precious gems and used their dust to decorate their lips with glimmer and riches. Women from Indus Valley Civilization used lipstick regularly, but it was Egypt where manufacture of lipstick received many advancements. There, royal members, clergy and high class used several types of lipsticks, some of them with recipes that contained poisonous ingredients that could cause serious illnesses. It was there that carmine color became popular, extracted from the bodies of cochineal insects, technique that is widely used even today

Lipsticks and other cosmetic products had a very important impact on our development. Here you can find facts about their journey through the ages, from the ancient kingdoms in Middle East to the phenomenon of global fashion.

History of Lipstick spans the entire modern history of mankind. Here you can find out more about its incredible journey from the Ancient Egypt, harsh times in medieval Europe, to the worldwide popularity that it enjoys today.

Who Invented Lipstick?

Determining who invented first lipstick is not an easy task, because they were present in our fashion from the earliest moments of our history. Here you can witness how that journey went, and how lipsticks became what they are today.

Lipstick Timeline

Lipstick timeline through our history is full of interesting events and moments when it had significant impact on our culture and fashion. Here you can find out when those important moments happened on the lipstick’s journey to worldwide popularity.

Lip Gloss History

Even though opaque lipstick can be found everywhere today, its popularity is heavily threatened by lip gloss, transparent substance that showcases our lips in more natural and subdued colors. Also, the rise in its popularity can be found in its beneficiary medical properties.

Max Factor History

History of cosmetics is full of influential companies that had great impact on worldwide fashion, but Max Factor managed to distinguish itself by very significant innovation in the field of lipsticks by introducing to the public Lip Gloss.

Cosmetic product always fascinated human race with their ability to make us distinct, pretty and more confident. No matter how large fashion changes swings occurred during last few thousand years, some cosmetic products always managed to remain popular and in widespread use. Soaps, shampoos, eye liners, nail polishers, make up paints, and various medicinal and protective balms survived trough the rise and falls of many civilizations, but one cosmetic item managed to survive for a long time without widespread popularity, only to become one of the most important cosmetic items of a modern woman – Lipstick.

There is no way for us to determine who discovered lipstick first. It was with us from the prehistoric times when women and men used various potent fruit and plant juices to mark their faces in religious ceremonies or to make themselves more pretty for the opposite sex. Of course, a very large reason for lipstick use was also for medicinal purposes, to protect our lips from natural elements such as dry wind, moisture and sun (lip tissue does not have melanin that protect us from UV rays).

As modern civilizations started to make rapid advances in technology and chemistry, first manmade lipstick appeared as a cosmetic tool for the wealthy women and men of ancient Mesopotamia, Indus Valley Region and Egypt. Egypt especially managed to advance the art of lipstick making, managing to produce bright red carmine lipstick that are made from cochineal insect pigments, which is a timeless technique that is in use even today. Those lipsticks were made from powdered and processed bodies of cochineal insects or purple extracts of seaweed, mixed with various oils and waxes. History book will forever remember various important Egyptian figures that were depicted in their hydrographic images with various cosmetic enhancements – Nefertiti’s black eyeliner or Cleopatra’s bright red lips.

History of the lipsticks tells us that European dark Middle Ages almost totally removed lipstick from the fashion. Harsh living conditions, constant wars, poor medicine, plagues, lack of food and many other factions led to the period of around 1000 years where very little or no advancements were made in arts, sciences and many areas of knowledge. In such environment, Church was the only constant presence in the mind of the Europeans, and church was responsible for maintaining fashion and common laws. Sadly, it was them who actively discouraged lipstick use, linking it to the Satan worshipers and cults. Because of that, only the female population of the lowest statue (prostitutes) continued to use lipstick on regular basis, with actors occasionally painting themselves in facial colors.

One of the most important moments in the lipstick history happened during the Islamic Golden Age when famous cosmetologist and chemist Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi managed to perfect his formula for solid lipsticks. These perfumed sticks represent the basis for all the modern lipstick that can be found in any fashion shop.

Several centuries later, lipstick returned to the popular fashion during the reign of English Queen Elizabeth I (1558 – 1603), but only for a short while. It was only in late 19th century when industrial advancements enabled French cosmetologist to start producing lipsticks for commercial sales. From that point, lipsticks slowly become more and more popular. New inventions enabled their packaging to get the form we known today (swivel-up tube), new types (sparkle, gloss), introduction of lip gloss, no smear formulas, new colors, and last but not least, very famous introduction of flavored “Lip Smackers” in 1973.

Today lipsticks are considered to be one of the most popular and cheapest ways for females to showcase their femininity and beauty.

The variety of lipstick forms

Matte Lipstick: Delivers sophisticated and a full intense coverage color that contains absolutely no shine. The reason beingiis its formulation is designed to stay longer, the reality is that it can be quite drying to the lips and it may give your lips the feeling and appearance of being dehydrated. The dark intense shades are beautiful, and  stays put so it won’t move and smear, It does not give that illusion of a fuller lip or a moist yummy lip at all.

Bangs ans Red Lips 170951198 (1)

Creme Lipstick: This particular formula contains more emollients than the matte lipstick and still provides you with a full coverage of moist color, not a shine coat. The cosmetic lines offer the largest selection of this formula due to the fact that it is the most versatile and popular. It wears very well and it doesn’t look dry.

Black and white glazed girl 8-25-14

Frosted Lipstick: This product gives you a pale shine, and metallic in appearance. Being that the single color of sheen  the formula’s contain in the ingredients, I personally don’t use it on me due to the fact that it shows every little crease, and it looks a bit dry too. I don’t recommend it on mature lips.

FrostedLipskgb_promos_2008_02

Sheer Lipstick: This product is actually of sheer glossy color that allows your natural texture and coloration to show through. Its formulation is designed to opaquely cover. It is very similar to a gel blush if you will, due that it is simply pigments mixed with a gel. It does last longer than a gloss, but not longer than a cream Lipstick.

Due to its sheerness it is great for a quick fix  and it doesn’t require precision when applied.

Facewith bangs and green eyes125835053

Gloss Lipstick: This product contains extreme shine and moisture.

When applied, it delivers a layer of sheer color that requires frequent application. Even though it doesn’t last long, gloss gives the appearance of freshness and moisture that is recommended for all age groups. When used correctly it makes lips look fuller.

This product comes in tube, pot or wand.

Glased woman 8-25-14

Last but not least lets talk about:

Lip Liner: This product comes as a pencil and is used to define and basically frame and shape the lips. If well used it helps to correct lip shapes as well as prevent lip color from bleeding outside of the lip line or into any little lines. I also use it to cover the entire lip. The lip is topped with a color of the same shade or lighter to give volume, you can use just gloss over it as well, make sure to blend so it doesn’t look harsh unless you like that finish. Using a lip liner greatly improves the staying power of any lip color.

Facts:

According to: Sloane. (1933). Teach your clients the correct use of lipstick. The Hairdresser and Beauty Trade. December, 12.

When carefully observing the lips we will disclose a number of rather surprising points. We can notice, for instance, that while the actual shape and size of the mouth varies considerably with each individual, when the mouth is reposed ( resting) each mouth will have the same factors in common. This is the actual shape of the upper lip in relation to the lower. You will notice that the upper part of the upper lip drops slightly and fits into a corresponding groove on the upper part of the lower lip. There are also two tiny grooves in the upper lip, into which two corresponding protuberances fit closely when the mouth is closed. A small remark that is a common denominator.

Another important point to notice is that the lower lip is always slightly deeper in colour than the upper lip. This means that in applying lip colour you must make the color a little deeper on the lower lip.Interesting balance and it works.

Apothecary Beauty Series

Sacred Flowers part I

Rose

To behold a flower is to look into the essence of beauty itself. In the blossom’s delicate perfection we are reminded of our own true nature. Throughout history, humans have utilized flowers to enhance our physical beauty. We gather their blooms, bathe in their sweet petals, brew teas and tinctures, extracts and essences, we distill them for oils and aromas that awaken our senses and inspire our most divine beauty rituals.

What is it about the flower that moves us so deeply and symbolizes the truest and highest forms of love? Whether her blossoms be humble and sweet or dazzling and magnificent the flower inspires. Flower blossoms awaken physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of ourselves which are deeply healing and rejuvenating. When we are nourished on these levels, we may find ourselves shifting from a survival mode of stress and strife, to a place of thriving. Flowers teach us to open our hearts, to allow our inner light to shine and our beauty to blossom. They nourish and feed our skin, our hearts, and our spirits.

Humans’ connection with flowering plants may in fact be the true origin of our concept of beauty. The beauty of a flower is by design, it’s purpose being attraction. The showier and more beautiful the flower, the more likely it’s is to draw the attention of a pollinator and further it’s species. In nature, beauty means health. Humans are attracted to the beauty and aroma of flowers and because of this attraction we keep them near us, assisting them in their evolutionary process. Certainly our relationship with flowers is mutually beneficial. We have cultivated certain flowers for centuries and incorporated them into many facets of our lives, health, cultures and religions, being truly enriched by their beauty. The flowers have been rewarded for attracting us , as their biological imperative is to continue their species. All via the simple metaphor of beauty. It is beautiful to consider that flowers have attracted us to them, and what beautiful gifts we receive in the process!

The Botany of Desire

The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World

Michael Pollan’s book The Botany of Desire discusses this flower human connection in depth and I highly recommend it, it’s a wonderful and compelling read.

While each and every flower contains a deep beauty, unique and precious, there are a few species which stand out as goddesses amongst the others. They are flowers that have attracted humans to them for eons and have a rich history of cultural significance, spiritual symbolism, and each contains precious compounds valuable for our physical beauty. How poetic that these most beautiful flowers are key to our own loveliness! Our foremothers knew the secrets that these goddess flowers posses and modern scientific analysis substantiates these truths.

Incorporating these sacred flowers into your daily beauty regimen will enhance and preserve your beauty as you receive the physical and energetic gifts contained with the petals. This is a fabulous way to indulge and honor your inner goddess! We begin the series on Sacred flowers with Rose, known as the queen of flowers. Rose is precious for her skin soothing anti-aging properties. She is revered in many cultures and has a rich history of symbolism and represents love across the world. What better way to enrich our own beauty than to lavish ourselves with Rose! Each of us can benefit from rose’s message of love.

Rose helps us to open our hearts and let our inner radiance shine.

ROSE

Rose is an ancient symbol of love and beauty. Her divine aroma is one of the most sought after and rose is rich valuable anti-aging compounds.

Love planted a rose and the world turned sweet. -Katherine Lee Bates

Historical Use of Rose for Beauty & health Rose blossoms have been used for health and beauty throughout history. Rose essential oil and rose water are believed to have originally been distilled in ancient Persia where it was used for beauty, medicinally and in food preparation. Ancient Egyptians so love the Rose that it was called the “Flower of Egypt.” It was believed to have a powerful aphrodisiac effect which could reach into the afterlife. A healing rose salve was made from boiling rose petals down into a thick oily substance and which was then used for many beauty and healing purposes. Rose is the flower of the goddess Isis, symbolizing love and healing.

Cleopatra loved roses and was said to have had her bed strewn in fresh roses daily. Undoubtedly her famed beauty was enhanced with the help of Rose. When she sailed away from her love Mark Anthony, the sails of Cleopatra’s boats were soaked in rose water. They wafted an aroma that is remembered to this day!

The Ancient Romans had over 32 medicinal uses for the Rose. The Ancient Romans and Greeks preferred to bathe in rosewater baths.

In Ayurveda the tea of Rosa damascena has been used as a laxative, blood purifier and tonic for the digestive and reproductive organs. Rose is cooling and toning and used in poultices for skin irritation,

The wild rose, native to North America has traditional medicinal & beauty use, particularly as anti- inflammatory eyewash and for stomach upset and diarrhea ( flowering parts). The fruits of the wild rose were a highly valued source of vitamin c.

Damask Rose, native to France was traditionally made into a syrup to aid in digestion and as an eyewash and eye lotion. Of course, the essential oil of damask ride or Rose Attar has long been highly prized for perfume and in aromatherapy.

Modern use of Rose for Beauty and Health

Rose has many beneficial properties, making it an ideal herb to enhance beauty. Used both externally as a wash, essential oil, tea or extract and internally as a tincture, syrup, jelly or tea Rose is highly astringent. This property makes Rose valuable to tissue and mucous membranes, whether internal- the stomach and gut, or external~ the skin. The concept of an astringent is often misunderstood as drying or oil reducing, but in fact astringents help to tone or pull together tissue which is no longer doing its job effectively. The walls of the epidermal cells are tightened which allows them to function properly. This means that nutrient absorption is improved, oil production balanced, cellular metabolism and circulation improve, allowing proper detox and nourishment.

With proper use of a true astringent, the condition and appearance of the skin is greatly improved and balanced. Rose is anti inflammatory and antioxidant making it ideal for anti aging use, it helps to protect from free radical damage and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress = collagen and elastin breakdown and wrinkles.

Rose is strengthening to the capillaries making it useful for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.

Rose has antibacterial properties making it an excellent wash for skin infections, wound care and for acneic skin types.

Rose essential oil is one of the most valuable and sought after essential oils. Its delicate sweet aroma awakens the senses and soothes nerves. It is uplifting, romantic and useful for depression.

Rose petals yield very little oil and it is for this reason that the essential oil is so precious. It takes almost one ton of Rose petals to yield one quart of essential oil!

Rose essential oil can be used very sparingly, one drop is extremely fragrant and goes a long way. When blended with a fixed oil or added to a lotion, there are few botanicals more useful for dry, aging or depleted skin. It will preserve the youth of your skin and awaken inner joy! Rose uplifts the spirit, opens the heart and allows the inner light to shine. Helpful for depression and grief. Rose carries a luxurious and sensuous energy. Treat yourself to a bath with a few drops of true Rose oil to truly pamper.

Because Rose oil is so precious, there are many imposters on the market. True Rose oil is always sold for a price that reflects its value. Find my favorite here: https://www.youngliving.org/annarummel

Rosehips and Rosehip seed oil:

Wild Rosehips grow in abundance in my home Montana; I grew up gathering then in the autumn after the first solid frost and made a tea from them to keep strong for the winter months to due to their high Vitamin C content. Rosehip seed oil is wonderfully dry oil, meaning it penetrates deeply and leaves no greasy residue. It supports tissue and cell regeneration making it excellent for aging, sensitive or damaged skin. It is high in EFAs and antioxidants as well as vitamins and minerals. This oil is amazing in preventing premature aging, protecting the skin from environmental stressors and restoring elasticity.

53 Uses for Coconut Oil

So, What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is an edible oil, like olive or macadamia oil, extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts. The oil is made up of around 90% saturated fat, 6% monounsaturated fat, and 3% polyunsaturated fat. Unlike other highly saturated and unsaturated fats, coconut oil is mostly made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs). The saturated fat content makes coconut oil very heat-stable and enables a long shelf life.  It is well-known for its healing, anti-inflammatory properties and its metabolism-boosting medium chain tryglycerides. It has many uses from dietary, medical and industrial applications.

Benefits Of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many benefits, from being directly associated with specific positive health effects to acting as an aid in certain body functions. I’ve read through dozens of papers, articles and blog posts and collated the following list of known/claimed benefits.Helps relieve symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. I’ve have also seen a lot of reports of coconut oil health benefits from those suffering from hypothryroidism, as coconut oil helps boost metabolism and raise body temperatures to promote thyroid health. Restricting carbohydrates and increasing coconut oil in the diet has also led many to report losing weight with coconut oil. Candida sufferers also report health benefits with coconut oil as research now confirms, and those suffering from various skin diseases are also seeing tremendous health benefits by applying coconut oil directly on the skin. The benefits of coconut oil for healthy hair are also well known, and other healthy benefits of coconut oil included fighting off bacterial infections and viruses. Coconut oil is also increasingly being seen to benefit athletes and fitness trainers giving them an advantage in sustaining energy levels longer without drugs or stimulants.

How Does It Work?

Have you ever heard of lauric acid? It’s a compound with amazing health promoting properties. It contains anti fungal, antibacterial, antiviral properties that boost the immune system. Coconut oil fat is nearly 50% lauric acid, which is converted by the body into monolaurin and makes coconut oil effective in treating many bacterial and fungal infections such as candida, athlete’s foot, measles, influenza, and hep C. Another source of monolaurin is human breast milk, go figure!
Another reason coconut oil has so many benefits is because unlike most other fats and oils, it is comprised of  medium-chain fatty acids, (MCFA’s), which are smaller fat molecules metabolised in the liver and immediately absorbed and converted into energy, kind of like glucose but without the insulin spike.  Other fats and oils are made up of long chain fatty acids, or long-chain triglycerides, which are larger molecules that are difficult for your body to break down and are mainly stored as fat. The MCFA’s in coconut oil actually boost your metabolism and help your body use fat for energy, which can lead to weight loss, Type 2 diabetes risk reduction, increase in energy, accelerated healing and improved immunity.  When it comes to your skin, coconut oil is very hydrating and keeps skin’s connective tissues strong, which prevents sagging and wrinkles.

Types Of Coconut Oil

Refined coconut oil

• Made from dried coconut, also known as copra; the standard end product made from dried kernel (meat) is RBD oil, which stands for refined, bleached and deodorised. The reason the oil has to undergo this process is that the dried copra is not fit for consumption and the oil needs to undergo processes to filter our impurities and to make it more stable; it’s a pretty common way to mass-produce coconut oil.
• Because it’s refined it’s fairly tasteless and doesn’t smell like coconut; it can withstand higher cooking temperatures before it reaches its smoke point; great for deep-frying foods without the flavor of coconut.
• It’s not as great as the virgin, completely raw coconut oil but still has the same beneficial medium chain fatty acids; from what I read, it’s very close in its nutritional value to virgin coconut oil so it’s more about the extraction method and what chemicals have been applied.
• Most of the coconut oils available in grocery stores and vitamin stores are refined unless they specifically state otherwise; not all refined oils are created equal so try to get good quality, non-hydrogenated (yep, even coconut oil can be hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated but mainly in tropical, Asian countries), and refined using natural, chemical free process like steam or diatomaceous earth.
• Refined oil is great if you’re on the budget as it’s usually cheaper. It’s also good for things which require lots of oil like deep-frying, using it as a bath oil or in soaps, or using it as a body moisturizer

Unrefined coconut oil

• Usually labelled as ‘virgin’ or ‘extra-virgin’, this coconut oil is made from the first pressing of fresh, raw coconut using mechanical means without the addition of any chemicals; depending on the extraction method, the flavor can be mild to very intense (more heat exposure during extraction, more coconut flavor in the oil).
• Good raw, unrefined, virgin coconut oil should have a very mild coconut flavor and scent.
• The difference between ‘virgin’ and ‘extra virgin’ is, well, pretty much none existent as far as I’ve researched, it’s more of a marketing trick to get you to pay more.
• Virgin, unrefined oil is more superior to refined coconut oil.

Extraction methods

Cold-pressed, expeller-pressed or centrifuged are methods of extracting oil from dry or fresh coconut and can be used for both refined and unrefined varieties. All methods can create a good, healthy oil. Expeller-pressed and cold-pressed don’t always mean ‘raw’ as sometimes these oils are heated to rather high temperatures during the extraction process, which is not a problem as coconut oil is a highly stable fat and will not go rancid. It does however mean that the flavor will be more coconutty. If you want a more mild and delicate coconut oil, look out for a centrifuged oil which is less likely to be exposed to heat during extraction.

Buying Coconut Oil

There are many brands and types of coconut oil and they vary in price depending on the source, production method, packaging and the marketing team. Super expensive doesn’t always mean the best, although it does often indicate the quality of ingredients and the purity. I always recommend to try a few brands and to find out as much as you can about the manufacturing process. Personally I really like Niulife coconut oil because the guy who started the company actually invented a natural expelling method they still use today and they are a fair trade and family owned business who make good products. However there are many great brands out there and regardless of where you are, here are a few things to look out for:

Color – white color when it’s solid and colorless when liquid, any discoloration might mean contamination and inferior quality.

Aroma and flavor – virgin, unrefined coconut oil should smell and taste like coconut but should not be overpowering and strong, if it smells roasted or smokey it means it’s been exposed to a lot of heat and it might not retain as many nutrients; and if it’s odorless and neutral tasting then it’s most likely refined and treated.

Price – the coconut oil in most stores can get quite pricey and doesn’t always mean superior product. It’s always a good idea to buy in bulk as the oil is stable and will last for at least 12 months. You can try a few different brands and make sure you like the smell and taste before you commit to buying a big batch. You can also share the shipping costs with friends and family and save even more money.

Storing Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can be stored out of the fridge, away from direct sunlight, for up to two years. It will stay liquid in temperatures above 25C (75F) and will turn into butter and solid texture in lower temperatures or if refrigerated. If the oil is solid and you need to use it in a liquid form, apply low level heat and it will transform very quickly.

How To Use Coconut Oil?

There are hundreds of ways you can use coconut oil – in cooking, as part of your skincare routine, as part of flu and cold treatment, or to rub on cuts and bruises. I’ve put together a few examples of how you can use it.
As far as how much coconut oil you should consume,  most recommend 3-4 tablespoons of coconut oil for adults per day to achieve optimal results. It would be less for kids and those of you starting out with coconut oil or saturated fats in general. If you’ve been following a low fat diet and only now decided to transition to a higher fat intake, I would recommend to gradually build up the consumption of fat to avoid the initial diarrhea you might experience along the way.
Coconut oil as food

• I use coconut oil in cooking as it’s very heat-stable. I fry and deep-fry in it, rub it on my roast meats, stir-fries and sauces. It’s really good for Asian cooking as its flavor is very complimentary.
• It is a solid most of the time at room temperature or when refrigerated and is therefore a great substitute for butter or margarine and can be used for dips, spreads, in baking and desserts. Use 1 to 1 ratio when substituting other oils or butter for coconut oilIt can even be used to make mayonnaise, I would used a good quality refined coconut oil for that.
• Add a couple of teaspoons to smoothies, juices, tea or coffee.
• Refrigerate it and eat as is by scrapping some with a teaspoon. The taste is slightly sweet and subtle, it really is quite nice and doesn’t have that oily texture you might expect, more like white chocolate.
• Mix some coconut oil with cacao & honey for a quick energy boost before a workout.

cooking

You can get both edible and inedible coconut oils in stores. The edible form of coconut oil is usually refined, bleached and deodorized. Virgin coconut oil
is considered the best as it is low in carbs and forms a great source of nutrition.Coconut oil that has been derived from copra as the starting is usually unsuitable for consumption and can be applied externally only. So,if you are purchasing coconut oil, make sure you confirm that is suitable for consumption to prevent to unwanted issues.
For external uses, expeller pressed or other types of refined coconut oil will work, but for internal use, an unrefined virgin coconut oil is best. This book provides more information about the benefits of coconut oil and the difference in the types of coconut oil.

Hydrogenated Coconut Oil

In most cases, the coconut oil that is refined, bleached and deodorized is hydrogenated fully or completely. This practice is common in tropical areas as the melting point of coconut oil is about 76 degrees F. The coconut oil retains its natural solid state in colder conditions. One common issue with coconut oil is the hydrogenation process itself.
Coconut oil contains very little unsaturated oil which makes it hard to hydrogenate. Once it is hydrogenated, however, it contains traces of transfatty acids.
